about

Written in three pieces, so as to reflect the artists ‘Rule of Thirds’ compositional element –

The Men of Egilsay – As echoing Port à Beul – The islanders going about their everyday work with this work song, with the recurring motif, which begins on plucked fiddle, symbolizing the overshadowing macabre events taking place.

The Bothy – A jig evoking a sense of joviality, as the Islanders enjoy the generosity of the Lords - “Enough shillings to drink the ale house dry” - albeit to distract from the ‘Event’ and the harsh day to day life on the island.

From Skaill to Bergen – A second jig, slightly more upbeat – A new hope! After the loading of the boats with offerings to the King in Bergen, a maritime adventure for some and chance to leave the sordid event behind perhaps? But alas, the return of the Bothy Jig, and stigma of their complicity.
